Bad Weather Routes
When rain or fog disrupts your hiking plans, these routes offer great alternatives. Scenic drives, indoor attractions, and experiences that work whatever the weather
Madeira's weather is hyperlocal. The north coast can sit in heavy cloud while the south is dry and warm — and a scenic drive on the right road can cross both worlds in 40 minutes. These routes were chosen because they stay below the cloud ceiling, pass through areas that tend to remain dry, or offer a worthwhile experience even in rain: sea cliffs, coastal roads, tunnels through the interior. None require stopping to hike. If the mountain trails are closed or conditions are poor in the hills, these give you a way to see the island properly rather than sitting in Funchal waiting for the weather to change.
