Above the Clouds
Stand above the cloud layer and look down at a cotton-like blanket covering the valleys below. These high-altitude viewpoints offer the best chances of witnessing this spectacle
When trade wind clouds roll into Madeira's northern valleys and stall against the central ridge, the high plateau sits in clear air above a white sea. This cloud inversion happens most reliably from late autumn through early spring — sometimes spectacularly, sometimes for days at a stretch. The viewpoints listed here sit consistently above the inversion layer. None guarantee the phenomenon — Madeira weather never does — but their elevation, all above 1,400m, makes them the right places to look for it. The light at these altitudes is harder, clearer, and carries a cold edge even in summer. Bring a layer even if Funchal is warm.
