Wake up early and witness Madeira's magic at dawn. East-facing lookouts offering spectacular views over the Atlantic, mountain peaks, and dramatic coastline

Madeira's highest peaks sit above the overnight cloud layer, which means sunrise is often a two-show event: the light arrives before the clouds burn off, and for an hour you watch the sea of white glow orange and pink below you. East-facing miradouros and summits above 1,400m offer the best conditions. The window is narrow — be in position 20 to 30 minutes before civil twilight. Mountain roads are driven in darkness, so plan your route the evening before. Temperature at altitude drops well below the Funchal forecast — bring a layer. Cloud inversion potential is highest in autumn and winter.
