Sunset Viewpoints
End your day with breathtaking views as the sun dips below the Atlantic horizon, often accompanied by spectacular cloud formations
Madeira's western cliffs face the Atlantic with nothing between them and the Azores. At the right time of year, the sun drops directly into the ocean and the light turns everything amber for fifteen minutes. West-facing miradouros — Ponta do Pargo, Cabo Girão, viewpoints along the Calheta coast — are best positioned for this. Sunset times vary significantly by season: as early as 17:30 in December, as late as 21:00 in June. Arrive 30 minutes before to secure a spot and find your angle. Several of these viewpoints attract tourist traffic at golden hour — drive-up accessibility means coaches can and do arrive.
